Extended Time Testing

Dr. Nomura provides evaluation services for special accommodations for standardized testing. Special accommodations may include extended time, taking breaks, or a quieter environment. For individuals with disabilities, such as Learning Disabilities (e.g., dyslexia) or ADHD / ADD, these accommodations are necessary to ensure a fair and non-discriminatory measurement of their ability. These evaluations can be useful for requesting accommodations on the ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE and other similar tests. They can also be useful in requesting accommodations in college/university classes.

This type of testing is not covered by insurance and is relatively expensive, but for some individuals it is critical to their future. Proceeding without accommodations can result in negatively biased scores which significantly underestimate their ability and could limit their future careers.

Dr. Nomura does not guarantee that the accommodations will be approved. Dr. Nomura’s objective testing results must prove, through empirical methods, that the disability is present and severe enough to warrant the accommodations and that the accommodations are effective and necessary for that particular individual. The psychoeducational / psychological evaluation report provided by Dr. Nomura (if the data supports the recommendation for accommodations) is one component of an individual’s application for accommodations. Each client should review the information provided by the agency (test publisher, office of disability rights) to be informed regarding all of the needed information.

The following information will be needed by Dr. Nomura in conducting the evaluation:

  • Dr. Nomura will need school records, sent directly to him. Clients usually must complete a release of information. The process can take some time. Complete records will improve the strength of a client’s case, and they should ideally include records from grade school through college.
  • Dr. Nomura will need documentation of previous learning problems or disability. This documentation can include previous evaluation reports, special education records, section 504 records, medical records, and letters from others attesting to the impairment (school staff, health care providers, relatives).
  • Dr. Nomura will need a medical and developmental history.
  • Dr. Nomura will need a written statement from the client describing the problems and need for accommodations. The statement should discuss how/when the problems began and how they have been treated or accommodated throughout the client’s life. If the client has no documented history of accommodations, then special attention should be given to explaining why. Sometimes, impairments are mitigated by informal measures, such as extensive private tutoring, informal accommodations from teachers, and other struggles endured by the client.
